The Benefits of Red-Light Therapy: Inch Loss, Skin Tightening, and Wrinkle Reduction

What is red-light therapy? A brief history, description of the technology, and portrait of some of the most effective devices currently on the market. - by Justin Quinn - 2013/02/08
A history of light therapy

Healers and doctors have recognized the healing properties of light since ancient times.  Adequate exposure to sunlight triggers the synthesis of vitamin D within the body, which increases bone health and immune function, and lowers belly fat and depression.  But sunlight is not the only type of light that is positively correlated with healing: in 1903, Niels Finsen received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for inventing the first artificial light source for "phototherapy".  And in the 1970s, red-light therapy was popularized as a way to reduce inflammation and healing time in professional sports injuries.  Several FDA-backed studies have demonstrated that red-light therapy improves the results of liposuction procedures by liquefying fat and reducing healing time and bruising.  Perhaps most exiting is the fact that red-light therapy reduces fat, tightens skin, and reduces wrinkles without surgery.

How does red-light therapy work?

Red-light therapy devices exploit a unique reaction that occurs when the body's fat cells are exposed to a particular frequency of red light (635nm).  In short, fat cells are 'tricked' into creating temporary pores in their membranes (or, outer 'shells').  These pores allow the fat cell to empty itself of its contents, mainly triglycerides (fatty acids) and stored toxins.  The released debris is then absorbed into the lymphatic system and bloodstream, and eventually either converted into usable energy or processed by the liver.  Finally, any fat not used up as energy is vacated naturally from the body (for example, through sweat and urine).
Red-light therapy also promotes collagen and elastin production, which aid in the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and cellulite, and increase the overall elasticity of the skin.  As well, FDA studies indicate that red-light therapy reduces LDL ('bad') cholesterol levels.  The most impressive aspects of red-light therapy are that it is non-surgical, pain-free, and there is no downtime.

Is red-light therapy effective?

FDA studies indicate that inch-loss from red-light therapy is permanent, as long as the patient continues to eat healthy and live a relatively active lifestyle.  That being said, there patients frequently return for 'touch up' treatments 6 months after their initial treatment package.
Providers often implement a protocol for their patients to follow before, during, and after treatment.  Patients should be mindful of drinking enough water, getting sufficient light exercise, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine.  Of note, patients who practice yoga demonstrate increased inch-loss over those who do not.

Is red-light therapy safe?

Absolutely: in over a decade of red-light therapy treatment, no demonstrable risks have been recorded.  That being said, not everyone is a candidate for red-light therapy.  In particular, individuals with active cancer, and expecting and/or nursing mothers should not receive treatment.  As well, individuals with compromised liver function should not receive red-light therapy treatments.
Though there is no added benefit from receiving treatments on consecutive days, there are no restrictions as far as long-term, follow up treatments are concerned.

Where can I get red-light therapy?

There are a number of different red-light therapy devices on the market.  However, certain devices are more effective and offer more 'convenient' treatment: some devices employ a 'paddle' system, which necessitate often awkward placement on the body.  Low-level laser devices, though they do not come in contact with the patient's skin, often do not create light of sufficient intensity to produce significant and desirable results.
The most recent trend in red-light therapy are devices that use high-power LEDs (light emitting diodes) to produce a 'field' of light.  One device in particular, UltraSlim, employs over 140 LEDs and is much more effective at producing significant, uniform, and long-term results.
